Alabaster Composite, Italy
17” tall
Early/Mid 20th Century
A softly rendered classical female figure, shown in contrapposto with her drapery falling low at the hips and gathered modestly across the torso. Her head turns gently to the side, expression calm and inward. The sculpting of the hair, fabric folds, and bare feet reflects a strong academic classical influence, modeled after Greco-Roman marble sculpture.
Alabaster composite was commonly used by Italian studios in the early to mid 20th century to achieve the softness, weight, and light-catching qualities of alabaster while allowing durability that solid alabaster would prohibit.
The warm ivory tone catches light beautifully, especially in natural sunlight, giving the surface a glow similar to aged stone. Signed at the base by A. Santini, a known Italian sculptor whose works were widely collected throughout the 20th century and often inspired by ancient statuary.
