I wanted to break from my usual paintings with a definite subject and try my hand at a landscape.

I wanted to see if I could create interest within starkness.

And to turn the starkness into interest!

I wanted the viewer of this piece look directly at the mountain where the sun is hitting it, look at the reflection in the waves, and then later notice there's a little ship in the frame.

This piece has moody, dark colors that come to life in the sun. The image first pictured is more true to life in color and values. The sun hitting the painting enhances the vibrancy a LOT - video on last slide shows this.

This master study is of Frederic Edwin Church's painting,

'The Iceberg,' (1875). I saw this piece and was absolutely drawn in. I wanted to use more vibrant colors to make this piece moodier and in line with my antique-style vibe when painting.
